Winchester Spine and Sport… Not just Back Doctors

A sentence that we hear all the time in our office is “I didn’t know you treat that!”.  Yes, when someone thinks of a chiropractor they think “Back Doctor”, which is a common perception, but we do things a little differently at Winchester Spine and Sport in Troy, MO. Wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee, hip, and pretty much any joint in the body, if it’s a musculoskeletal condition then we probably treat it.

Someone that works overhead or uses their arms all day (painter, drywall hanger, hair stylist, etc.) will more than likely run into shoulder impingement at some point in their professional careers.  An anti-inflammatory will help this, but what will really make a difference is making sure the muscles around the shoulder are strong, stable, and functionally moving the way they’re supposed to and not creating unnecessary stress that will eventually lead to an injury.

Barring a traumatic fall or accident, a trip to your primary care physician should probably not be your first stop.  Medical doctors typically aren’t heavily trained in musculoskeletal conditions and generally will prescribe you an anti-inflammatory, a muscle relaxer, and tell you to take it easy for a few days.  Although this may lead to the problem eventually going away, more than likely it will come back. That’s where functional change comes in.

Sprained ankles from soccer, knee injuries in basketball and volleyball, shoulder impingement and elbow inflammation in baseball and softball, none are directly spine issues and yet we treat all of these conditions. Injuries that come from a repetitive overuse nature will generally get better through specific manual therapy, joint manipulation, and neuromuscular stabilization.  All of these are what we are trained to do. If it’s a muscle or joint issue, we treat it. If it’s something we can’t treat, we’ll send you to the right specialist to take care of you.Injuries that come from a repetitive overuse nature will generally get better through specific manual therapy, joint manipulation, and neuromuscular stabilization.  All of these are what we are trained to do.
